Downsizing Your Home

Looking to move to a smaller property?

Downsizing your home can help improve your quality of life for many reasons. You might want to be closer to loved ones or are looking for a more manageable property and garden. You also might want to reduce living costs. Here are a few how to tips on how to prepare for downsizing.

Decluttering

Start with a small room, as tackling smaller areas can help you build momentum. Gather supplies like bin bags, recycling bags, boxes, labels, and cleaning products. Having everything on hand will make the process smoother.

Donate, sell, recycle, or rubbish?

Sort items into donate, sell, recycle, or rubbish. Be ruthless, though it can be difficult. Avoid overthinking and try and make a quick decision. Ask yourself if the item is useful, is meaningful and if it’s been used in the past year. Once you know which items you no longer need, they can be offered to friends and family or sold via social media marketplace or donated to a local charity – many of which are able to collect from your home.

Room by room

If you are decluttering a room, go through one category at time eg books, clothes, electronics, instead of tackling the entire room at once. Reduce the number of plates, bowls and cutlery you might have in your kitchen.

Take your time

If you’ve moved house before, you will appreciate how much time it takes to pack everything away. Once your house is on the market, if not before, make an early start on decluttering.

Your new home

Think about what you want to take with you to your new home. Measure up, make decisions on furniture and large items you want to take with you. This will help you to decide what might need to be given away or sold before you move.
