How To Move Your Family

Published: 22/11/2023

Moving your family to a new home and possibly a new location can be daunting. Here are a few tips on how to help you through this process:-

Plan Ahead

Start Planning the move well in advance. Give yourself several weeks or even months if possible to prepare.

Create a Budget

Determine your budget for the move. Include expenses such as moving services, travel costs, and any new purchases you may need.

If Moving to a New Location

Decide on the new location you'll be moving to. Research the area, including schools, job opportunities, and amenities.

Hire a Moving firm or prepare to move yourselves

Decide whether you'll hire a professional moving company or handle the move yourself. If hiring movers, get quotes and book well in advance. Look a quotes for self drive vans if you want to DI.

Consider whether you need additional insurance coverage for your belongings during the move. Some moving companies offer insurance options, or you can purchase third-party insurance for added protection.

Before packing, go through your belongings and decide what to keep, donate, or discard. This will reduce the amount of items you need to move.

Gather Packing Supplies

Collect boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and other packing materials. You can often find these supplies at local self storage companies or order them online.

Pack Room by Room

Start packing your belongings room by room. Label boxes with the contents and the room they belong in. Keep important documents and valuables with you during the move.

Update Addresses

Set up a redirect on your address with the Post Office service, let your bank, doctors surgery, dentist, HMRC, work, insurance companies and any other important contacts (don't forget the vets if you have any pets). Notify friends and family of your new address.  If you have children, inform their current schools of the move.

Final Walkthrough and Cleaning

Before leaving your old home, do a final walkthrough to ensure nothing is left behind. Clean the space so it's ready for the new owners.

Unpack and Settle In

Once you arrive at your new home, start unpacking and settling in. Focus on setting up essential rooms first, like the kitchen and bedrooms.

Explore your New Community

Get to know your new neighbourhood and community. Find local services, shops, and activities for your family.

Keep Organised

Keep important documents, receipts, and contact information handy during the move and in the following weeks. Organisation can help to reduce stress.

Stay Positive

Moving can be stressful, but try and maintain a positive attitude. It's an opportunity for a fresh start and new experiences for your family.
