One major feature of the town is Christchurch Park which is a 70-acre area of rolling lawns, woodland, and delicately created arboreta in the centre of Ipswich. Annual events are held in the park such as the Ipswich Music Festival, open-air cinemas, Bonfire Night and Remembrance Sunday.

The Ipswich docks area ("the waterfront") is now devoted primarily to leisure use and includes extensive recent development of residential apartment blocks and a university campus. Businesses operated from the dock include luxury boats and a timber merchant.
